Family History:
The Joneses were a pure muggle family until Avery was born. Maximilian was born to Esther and Merit Jones and raised in a rather wealthy environment. He went to a good private school and afterwards went to a prestigious university. Soon, however, it was discovered that his parents were in debt and he had to transfer to a school that cost less and get a decent-paying job to help support his family. It was hard work for him to balance school and a job, but he managed to do it.
Elizabeth Jones (nee Elizabeth Roberts) was raised in the English countryside by Joseph and Catherine Roberts. Her family owned a farm and she grew up working on it with her two brothers until she decided to leave for university. While there, she met Max, who had just transferred, and they became fast friends. She supported him when he needed it, and was especially there for him when his mother passed away, and then his father soon after.
It was only after three years of knowing each other that they got married. They moved into a small flat in London once they'd both graduated university and started their careers. Max had trouble finding a job and so was forced to work as a bartender for one job and sales manager for the other, while Elizabeth ended up waitressing. Despite their difficult financial situation, they both wanted a child, and so they started trying only eight months after marriage. It was two years after that, however, that Elizabeth became pregnant with Avery.
Character History:
September 13th, 1959, was a happy day for Max and Elizabeth Jones. They'd been having trouble conceiving, so when it was discovered that Elizabeth was pregnant, they were ecstatic. Avery was and still is their only child and they love her to death. Unlike most only children, however, they did not spoil her; they didn't have the money to. Because of this, Avery grew up with scarce belongings, but happy all the same. When she was nine, her father managed to land a very well-paying job in a large business and they were finally able to have some luxuries.
When Avery's Hogwarts letter came, the entire family was shocked. Was this some sort of joke? Obviously not, however, because it was brought by a wizard himself -- a tiny little man named Professor Filius Flitwick. Apparently, he was the head of one of the houses at Hogwarts and explained everything to the muggle family. He even happily escorted them to Diagon Alley to buy her school supplies. When Avery finally arrived at Hogwarts -- dressed in her very own school uniform -- she was sorted into Ravenclaw. At first, this made her giddy: she was very smart and loved to read and learn. However, as time went on, she became friends with people in the mixed houses classes, especially the Gryffindors. As immature as the Marauders were sometimes, she grew fond of them, along with Lily Evans. She found herself wishing she'd been sorted into Gryffindor when the other female Ravenclaws decided they didn't like her much for being friends with the Marauders.
Now, even though Avery wears the Ravenclaw house colors, she can often be seen cheering on Gryffindor in quidditch and other contests, even when her own house is the opponent. She also, more often than not, sits at the Gryffindor table in the Great Hall (she's only caught sometimes).
Personality & Defining Characteristics:
Physical Attributes:
Avery stands at about five foot five, with a slim build. Her arms are rather long, but not abnormally so. It can also be said that she has larger-than-average lips. She takes more after her mother, Elizabeth, with the dark hair and eyes. Her father, however, has the pale skin that she inherited. Whenever she stays in the sun for even just ten minutes, she gets minor burns, and can never seem to tan. Her hair is naturally wavy and she usually keeps it that way. Sometimes she can be seen with her hair straightened, but she normally is too lazy to do much with it. Her eyes are brown and she rarely puts on makeup to emphasize them. Again, she tends to prefer not to take the time and effort to do so.
Lily Collins
Personality:
Being a Ravenclaw, Avery does love to read and learn; she always has. However, she is definitely not anti-social. She's extremely friendly and will talk to almost anyone. Because of this, she often finds it difficult to stay angry at people for very long, even if it's something big. She reasons with herself, giving the whys and whats, and quickly forgives them. She is, though, very witty and sarcastic. She loves to tease people and poke fun; she can also be a bit violent sometimes. She tends to playfully hit/kick her friends when teasing them. It has led to many small bruises on her friends' parts.
Avery is almost always hungry. She has a high metabolism from her mother's side of the family -- hence her small frame. This caused her to go searching for the kitchens early in second year and she was quick to discover it. Now she often sneaks down there to grab food from the house elves. She also eats a ridiculous amount of food at meals; many people have teasingly told her that she should have been born a boy. She isn't at all athletic and has horrible stamina, but she's wonderful with charms and healing. The logical side of her brain often also makes sense of things before she can stop it, making her disbelieve things easily with evidence that most people wouldn't notice.
Likes:
Books, learning, charms, healing, Frank Sinatra, food
Dislikes:
Bad grammar/spelling, people that are rude for no reason, hunger
Aspirations:
Avery would love to be either a healer at St. Mungo's or a muggle doctor. Right now, it looks like healer might be the best option.
Fears:
being alone (in life, not in general), getting yelled at
Best Memory:
Avery's best memory was when she received her Hogwarts letter from Professor Flitwick. It was undoubtably her happiest moment. A close second would be her first day actually at Hogwarts. She adores learning magic and was ecstatic to the point of tears when she found out that it was actually real.
Worst Memory:
In her first year, when it was discovered that she was muggle-born, the older Slytherins took it upon themselves to call her a mudblood every chance they got. At first, she didn't understand what it meant, but once she was informed, it quickly grew into a hurtful experience. From there it escalated into shoves and trips with the name-calling, and finally to hexing and cursing before Avery managed to gain enough confidence to protect herself.
Education
Strengths:
Anything to do with school Avery is good at. She particularly excels at Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, and Astronomy. She's also decent at Defense Against the Dark Arts, as she's had to protect herself against the teasing of the Slytherins before. She does very well under pressure and has an extremely good memory; because of this, she doesn't have to study very much.
Weaknesses:
Avery can be a bit of a teacher's pet; she often has trouble seeing bad in any of the professors, even if it's obvious. She isn't good at all with sports or anything athletic; she gets tired quickly and complains of being sore and out of breath. Avery can also be nice almost to a fault. She will be nice to someone even after they've hurt her, as she forgives so easily. Her body is weak as well, making her an easy target for physical violence.
Patronus:
Avery loves to learn everything she can, so she's learned about patronuses and has attempted to create one on multiple occasions. All she can manage at the moment, however, is a little wisp of silver, so its shape is currently unknown.
Quidditch:
Not applicable.
Extras:
Not applicable.
Behind the Scenes
Name:
Holmes (but I do also go by Viper, Bird, and Ezzy)
Gender:
Female
Years of Roleplaying:
Ten years, but actual serious roleplaying… only seven years.
Written Portion
The Slytherins were at it again. This time it was Lucius Malfoy and his "friends." I say it that way because I honestly believed he didn't have any real friends; they surely only followed him because they were afraid or he paid them. I'd yet to figure out which one it was, though.
Anyway, the four green-and-silver-clad students were trying to corner me in the dungeons after my potions class. Really? Four on one? In the dungeons? How much more cliche can you get? Also, four on one really isn't fair at all. I tried to tell Malfoy this, but he obviously didn't care and laughed in my face, the quartet raising their wands.
Well, if that was the way they wanted to play it.
My wand was out of my pocket before I could even think about retrieving it. (Muscle memory and reflexes are my friends.) They were already shooting curses and hexes my way; I quickly repelled them. One managed to get past and grazed my arm, causing my robe to rip and the spell to burn and slice my skin. I held back the hiss of pain and continued trying to protect myself.
Thankfully, I knew more creative incantations than those Slytherins. (It must have been because they spent all their time proving their loyalty to their "Dark Lord.") Tarantallegra caught the boy on the far left and he was sent into a furious dance that caused him to trip and fall backwards, legs still flailing.
I would have laughed had the situation been less serious.
I managed to stupefy Malfoy and my petrificus totalus caught the girl on his right. Finally, there was only one left. It was easy to catch him with the Leg-Locker Curse: all I did was mutter, "Locomotor mortis," and he was done.
Had that been a friendly duel or a silly joke, I would have stayed to rejoice in my triumph. However, I was still in the dungeons and the cut on my arm was bleeding and giving off a horrid smell. So I spun on my heel, leaped over the still-dancing Slytherin, and sprinted up to the higher levels.
When Madame Pomfrey asked me what had happened, all I told her was that a spell had gone wrong in class. She looked suspicious, but didn't push me any further. Good. I wasn't about to tattle on the Slytherins; they were just brainwashed by evil forces. That didn't deserve punishment. Besides, the cut was healed in thirty seconds anyway.
