Staring at the cobble stoned streets, Lily felt like a weight had been lifted off of her shoulders. Looking around at all the shops, the cloaks and of course the magic, Lily felt as though she had returned from a holiday where she knew she had overstayed her welcome. One where the language barrier was huge and no matter how much one paid attention or how long they were exposed to it, one still stood there feeling the utter confusion that was not understanding a single word someone said.
“Now, are you sure you’re going to be okay?” Lily smiled as her mother’s voice from only an hour before floated into her ears. “Are you sure you’ll be able to get everything you need?” “Mother I’ll be fine!” she assured her constantly as she gathered all of what she deemed to be the ‘necessities’. “But, it’s London, I don’t feel right about letting my little girl loose in London!” “Oh come on Carolyn!” her father had interrupted. “We’ve been to Diagon Alley, there are many places Lily can get lost. There a telephone bocks just two buildings from that pub she will use as an entrance, it is not as though she’s flying half way around the world now! She’s going to London, for all of about 3 hours. Let her do it.” And as quickly as they had come, the auditory ghosts left leaving Lily feeling both comforted and independent.
Clutching her Hogwarts list in her hand, Lily finally began to move. Knowing it was where she would spend most of her time, Lily made a mental note to leave the visit to Florish and Blotts last and quickly made a beeline for Madame Malkins’ Robe shop. Standing on that stool making the usual small talk with the witch, Lily nearly fell over in shock when she found out that she had done what she thought was now physically possible. She had grown!
In a strangely content daze Lily continued the rest of the day. Laden down with shopping bags she pushed open the door to Florish and Blotts and it was then Lily realised she gotten through the whole day without seeing anyone she knew which was very strange. A strange feeling of disappointment started to grow inside of her however, she quickly reasoned with herself pointing out the fact that there was still time yet…

Marlene walked out of Gringotts, after visiting her parents vault and getting the money she would need for the day, with a smile on her face. This would be the second last time she came to this place to do school-shopping and the feeling was bittersweet.
On the one hand, she only had two more years at Hogwarts before she could go on and do what she really wanted to do; become a Healer. But on the other hand she wasn't quite sure she was quite ready to give up the magnificent school.
Enough, now, Marles. She scolded her self, straightening her shoulders and giving her head a little shake. No need to worry about that now. Concentrate on something pleasant...shopping for instance. Her smile brightened and she continued down the street with an extra skip to her step.
Her first stop was Potage's Cauldron Shop, as her current cauldron was getting too old and it was time to get a new one. The next stop was Apothecary where she picked up the potions ingredients and supplies that she would need and then it was on to Madam Malkin's where she bought new school robes and quite a few pieces of clothing that she probably didn't need.
Marlene had decided earlier that day that she absolutely had to visit Quality Quidditch Supplies, even if she wasn't a player -or even much of a fan of the game- because there was no where better to find attractive young men to ogle and flirt with. Which was exactly what she did, for an hour with a particularly handsome Hufflepuff boy about to enter his seventh year.
But soon enough she was bored and waved goodbye to him to make her last stop of the day; Flourish and Blotts.
It wasn't exactly her favorite shop; after all -despite popular belief- Marlene did not like doing school work and she didn't particularly enjoy picking up the books that she would soon become intimately familiar with. However, she did enjoy the romance novel or two, so it wasn't all bad.
She stepped in, carrying all of her other bags -which were very heavy and she made a mental note to make someone come with her next time just to carry all the things she bought- and looked around.
It was then that she spotted Lily. With a smile, Marlene skipped over to her, “Evans” she greeted the “competition.” Not that she was particularly competitive with anyone but herself, and she even liked Lily well enough. But that didn't change the fact that they were both two of the brightest witches in their year and Marlene often viewed Lily Evans with a sort of friendly competition, even if she didn't say so out loud.

It took a while for Lily to realize that someone had called her name. As usual when she was reading a book, her mind had taken her to a place where no one else existed but the words upon whatever page she was reading. Shaking her head she laughed at herself. Could she sound more like a nerd?
However once her brain had registered that it was her last name being called, Lily could not help but grimace slightly, despite the fact that the person had a distinctly feminine voice. This meant, surely, that it could not be who she was suspecting. ”It’s simple logic Lils, come on! Why is he in your thoughts anyway?” Lily asked herself angrily.
Closing the copy of ’Creative Charms for Artistic Witches’ Lily turned round and, even though she had figured it out by now, still sighed with relief when she saw none other than Marlene McKinnon standing before her. ”McKinnon.” Lily greeted Marlene, imitatingg her formal tone but smiling as she did so. ”What have I done to deserve such a formal tone. Did I offend or wrong you in some way over the summer?” Lily said feigning that she was hurt. ”It’s the hair isn’t it?” Lily asked jokingly running her fingers through her dark red hair.
Noticing all her bags Lily placed her book upon the nearest pile and laughed. ”I see someone’s doing the yearly shop as well! But, jeez Marlene! You do realise there are probably still more than 500 students that need to shop for the new school year don’t you? What did you do? Buy out half of Diagon Alley?” Lily joked
Though she would never tell Marlene, this was something she envied about her. Not that she could shop, any girl could shop to that degree, no, the fact that Marlene never held back. It was something that always stumbled Lily when they were ’against’ one another. Not that she regarded Marcompetitionetiition. Not at all. But it still threw Lily off balance.
